Why do you write?
I love to write. It’s a passion is all I can say. When I’m not working I’m writing. My yard work suffers when I really get into a story.
When did you decide to become a writer?
- I’d been an avid romance reader all my life and decided I wanted to try my hand at writing. I didn’t get serious about it until 2014. I published my first book, book one in my Forever and a Night series 4/26/16.
What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?
I loved reading romance so much I thought surely I could write one, but that wasn’t the case. Off and on for twenty years I played with writing until one day I said, I’m just going to do it and so I wrote my first complete book, edited the heck out of it and sent it off to be published.
Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?
I write when it’s the most quiet. When no one is around. It’s usually early in the morning or early afternoon when I get off work.
Do you listen to music or watch TV/movie while you write?
Never. It’s too distracting.
What have you written?
Five books in a vampire series, Forever and a Night. Each book is stand alone, but each story is about one of the children of Mia Peebles Davenport who is the heroine in book one. She has three grown human children who through dark circumstances becomes vampire in their own book. Her two youngest children are born vampires and each have their own love story.
Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just seeing where an idea takes you?
I have a mental outline, but I do prefer to write seeing where my characters will take me. They haven’t let me down yet.
Do you design your own book covers or have someone else? If you use someone else would you tell us who/website?
My publishers design my book covers. I did do the cover for Forever and a Night Dark Experiments, but it’s a temporary cover. This book just got purchased by Bella Tulip Publishing and they will create a cover for the book which will be available as an ebook or paperback.
Is there any marketing technique you used that had an immediate impact on your sales figures?
I set up as many book signings as possible. I’m a great salesperson so I sell a lot of books at book signings.
Any advice for aspiring authors?
Develop a passion for writing and don’t make excuses for why you can’t write. Make the time. That’s the only way to become a published writer.
Give us an insight into your main character. What does he do that is so special?
In Forever and a Night Dark Experiments I have two main characters. Tiffany Peebles who is a human in love with a vampire. She has commitment issues which keep her from her one true love, sexy Dr. Christian La Mond who is a vampire OB/GYN. Tiffany is independent to a fault, quirky and has a very sarcastic sense of humor. Christian is the epitome of patience. As he’s falling in love with Tiffany he has to put up with a lot from her. Everything from her pushing him away because of her commitment issues to her racking him when he turns her into a vampire to save her life. However they are a perfect balance for each other.
What is the hardest thing about writing?
Getting over a temporary writer’s block. If I’m not writing I feel guilty, but I’ve learned that sometimes I just have to back away for awhile. Eventually, it all comes to me, but I can’t force it. That just doesn’t work.
What is your favorite movie or TV show?
The Big Bang Theory. My heroine Tiffany Peebles is a computer geek. Sheldon Cooper is one of her favorite characters.
You mentioned you’re writing a new story. How about a teaser?
I’m writing book five in my Forever and a Night series. It’s about Alabama Rain Holden, a young female vampire who steals and deals drugs for her evil feral drug lord father. She meets billionaire Nate Davenport one night on one of her drug stings and he’s immediately intrigued with the beautiful, silver haired Alabama Rain, but when he finds out she’s involved in drug theft and dealing, he’s determined to put a stop to her nefarious ways and make her pay for her crimes. That is until he learns she’s an abused woman by her father’s hand and he’s forcing her to deal for him. His obsession from there is to free her from her father’s evil hold over her.
Do you have any formal education in creative writing? If not are you planning to go to school?
No. I learned through trial and error. I spent many years in writers groups which really helped me to learn creative writing. I highly recommend to any aspiring writer to join a local writer’s group. Other writers seem to always be eager to help and I can’t say enough about that.
Do you have any fur babies to brag about? You can include a picture if you like.
My cat Felix. He loves to sleep in sinks. Go figure.
Do you or have you sat down and read your book fresh off the presses as if it wasn’t yours? And if you did, what was it like?
Yes I have. My first book Forever and a Night. All I can say is it was surreal to read a print book of a story I’d spent years writing and polishing.
What is one great lesson you have learned as a writer?
You have to have a deep passion for writing in order to be a good writer. Making time daily is also critical.
Do have a favorite car or truck model?
Ford F150 truck. Bright red.
Do you ever feel self-conscious when writing love/sex scenes?
Yes. Sex scenes are very hard for me to write. I want them to be passionate and seamless and most of all not cliche. That’s not always very easy.
What do you think of traditional publishing vs. self-publishing?
If I could be traditionally published I would always choose that over self publishing.
